Although it’s been said that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder,’ it doesn’t mean that there aren’t any general concepts about beauty.
Most of us agree on what we think is beautiful and attractive, be it a straight nose, clear skin, bright eyes, and so on. The same is true for your website – although many different web users have many different preferences, there are still some general characteristics of an attractive and professional website which most users will agree on. So do you want a truly professional website? Here’s how to do it right.
A clear, simple homepage

Your homepage is the façade of your business, so to speak. If the façade isn’t compelling, impressive, or attractive, it’s easy for users to go elsewhere – and this is something you, along with our web design specialists in our Bristol, certainly wouldn’t want. That being said, it’s crucial for you to have a good homepage. A good homepage should be simple, concise and to the point – your main message should be clearly stated, and users should be welcomed with clear paragraphs, bullet points, or big subheadings. Stay away from long paragraphs and if you can, make it a point to use icons or symbols to illustrate a point.

A visual ‘pecking order’

When it comes to a professional website, you would want to stick to clear, organised divisions and separations. This means establishing a visual ‘pecking order’ of what you are, what you are offering, what you are all about, and the like. Once you have established your ‘pecking order’ or hierarchy, you can focus your attention on color and contrast, spacing, and font size. One thing you can do: divide your webpage into strips; these allow for clear and concise, as well as easily digestible, information.

The physical aspects

Even if your website is clearly and concisely done, if there is no readability to it, you can quickly lose the interest of visitors. Readability, as our very own web design experts in Bristol confirm, refers to how easy it is for users to recognise the words and text in your site. If you have a high site readability, then it follows that visitors will be likely to stay on – and absorb whatever information you are trying to send across. One way to increase your site’s readability is to make sure there is enough contrast or distinction between your content and the background. Whilst it’s generally okay to play with different colours, make sure the colours you choose complement each other. Another aspect is the font – you’d want a font that is easy to read. A good starting point for the body of your text would be 16pt, although this will still depend on the kind of font you use as well.

Keep the above-mentioned pointers in mind, and you’re on your way to having a professional, attractive, and impressive website.
