There’s always a lot of emphasis on website navigability, the use of the right images, and even the use of the proper colours when it comes to designing a good website.
And whilst all these aspects are undoubtedly important – nay, crucial – there’s yet another aspect which needs careful thought as well: the font/s you use. The fonts you choose for your website can have a big impact, not only in your website’s readability, but also in the attention span of your visitors. The types of fonts
There are, of course, different types of fonts out there, but there are basically two to three main choices: serif, sans serif, and script. Serif, for example, is characterised by small lines or points for the letters, much like font types such as Baskerville or Times New Roman. This type of font has more of a classic, old school look, which makes it great for printed material such as newspapers and magazines, although this doesn’t make it that ideal for online use, according to our web design in Bristol professionals.
When we talk about sans serif, it literally means ‘without’ serif. Sans serif fonts are characterised by letters which don’t have lines or points, and are much simpler in design. In general, sans serif fonts such as the popular Verdana or Arial are best for online content or text. The script font can be easily distinguished by its fancy curls and curves – and whilst script can be attractive, make sure you don’t overdo it. You can use it for some texts or headings, but you don’t want to strain the eyes of your visitors with too much script. Another thing to bear in mind in regards to script: whilst you can use them for headings or sub-headings, avoid using them for calls to action.
How many to use
There is also a general rule of thumb when it comes to the number of fonts you should use for a website. The recommendation is two to three, and that’s it. If you want your website to look more elaborate with a variety of fonts, you can still do it – but make sure the fonts complement each other.
Whilst it’s all well and good to make sure you use only two or three fonts or make sure you choose the right type of font, the readability is also something you need to consider, as our web design in Bristol specialists recommend. This means making sure that the fonts you choose are fully utilised so your text and content are easy to read. So, rather than use another font for a heading and a paragraph, you can simply enlarge the font for the heading, but stick to the same one.
